Abstract

This article suggests that the use of license-free wireless networks can enhance work zone safety, reduce traffic delays, and increase the efficiency of a road project. The author describes the broad range of technologies and applications that fall under the terminology of “wireless.” The most commonly used in traffic management systems are spread spectrum systems, which can be subdivided into Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum systems or Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing devices. Both types have become the standard for communication within Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) due to cost savings—about one-tenth that of cabled alternatives. The author describes three examples of wireless applications for work zones: video of the work site, communicating with advanced warning beacons, and communicating with variable message signs to warn motorists of changing traffic conditions.
