Abstract

To qualify for federal funding for roadway construction, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued a number of rules and procurement options for work zone monitoring. This article provides of summary of these rules, which went into effect October 12, 2007, and are intended to provide greater safety and mobility of work zones during various stages of roadway projects. Each state is required to implement a policy to assess work zone impacts. Specific plans must be developed for projects deemed significant. The author describes feature of the systems that are available commercially and can be modified. These include web display of data and video, changeable message signs, stand alone video, interfaces to third party systems, sensors for traffic and weather, stand alone video, and interfaces to existing infrastructure.
