Abstract

This article examines the use of compact solar school zone flashers as an improvement over hard-wired flashers. The author notes that solar technology has progressed significantly, and offers both cost reductions and the possibilities for increasing the number of applications. The author discusses combining solar technology and light emitting diodes. In areas where a traffic agency manages a large number of school zone flashers and utilizes pager technology to control the system, it is possible to add solar-powered school zone flashers that are compatible with third part programmable time switches. The author asserts that solar power flashers can be installed without the need for large changes in infrastructure, which represents big savings.
