Abstract

Due to its rapid growth, the city of Greeley, Colorado, was in need of new traffic signs within the public right-of-ways and in new developments. With the need both for new signs and for a system that could track the number, type, condition and location of signs, the city's Transportation Services Division began implementing a Global Positioning System (GPS) Inventory Program in 2000. Under this system, a Geographic Information System (GIS) database can be created that allows spatially referenced data to be stored, managed, analyzed and queried. Using GPS, approximately 15,000 signs have been inventoried. The process of inventorying signs, however, is an on-going one. The use of this technology allows city officials to install new traffic signs and other assets, maintain existing signs, and perform future replacements in accordance with existing standards.
