Abstract

Incorporating solar and wireless technologies can lead to more cost- effective crosswalk warning devices. Solar power eliminates costly electrical connections and wiring, and by using wireless technology to transmit signals to beacons, trenching wires across a roadway can be avoided. This article describes a self-contained unit that has its electronics and battery pack mounted in the signal head. The unit features top-mounted solar panels and doesn't require a traffic control cabinet. The design of the system allows beacons to have flexibility in their installation and mounting arrangements.
