Abstract

Modular designs increase the scope and applicability of dynamic message signs beyond the traditional fixed or large portable installation requiring heavy duty supports and transporters. The modular bricks can make signs of any size, and their light weight and a connecting system allows them to be bolted to almost any material. The signs are also completely reconfigurable. Sites are described where the signs have been deployed. These include: fixed roadside signs on a narrow shoulder roadway; overhead installations that have more message capability than traditional drum signs they replaced; storm evacuation signs that are easily transported to different locales, depending on the weather; and truck-mounted helper signs.
