Abstract

An automated fog and smoke detection/warning system developed by Georgia Tech researchers uses commercially available fog detectors tied into a fiber optic network linked to a central computer that has links to the traffic management center and four changeable message signs. This is the first fully automated fog warning system in the U.S., though several others operate in Europe. Researchers hope it will serve as a prototype.
