Abstract

Rolling blackouts as a result of California's ongoing electricity shortages are pushing public agencies to install more efficient traffic signals and, to a lesser extent, street lights. The most popular step is replacing incandescent red signal lamps with LED units. The combination of more efficient displays and improved battery technology is making battery back-up systems more practical, too. Street lights, however, remain problematic, with more energy-efficient replacements several years from market. Vendors of different systems are named.
