Abstract

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development conducted a field study to analyze the performance and deterioration characteristics of retroflective sheeting materials used on traffic signs. The analyses showed that, overall, the signs were performing well relative to the specification criteria during and after the warrantee period. The study also showed that sign cleaning nearly doubled the rate of sign compliance. Somewhat surprisingly, analyses also showed no clear links between factors such as proximity to the road or sign orientation to a premature deterioration of sign sheeting material. A set of performance models were developed to assess the relative rates of deterioration between various sign groups during their service lives. This article discusses these results and provides a useful source of data to assist highway agencies focus sign maintenance efforts on sign groups possessing particular characteristics.
