Abstract

This article offers ways in which traditional driver education programs or driver licensing tests could be improved such that the material covered or imparted would be of more practical use. Suggested topics to be included in revised classes or tests are: 1) actuated signals and detection placement; 2) pedestrian button operation; 3) right-turn-on-red vs. U-turns; 4) left turn "sneakers"; 5) flashing DON'T WALK signs; 6) lead-lag phasing; and 7) signal preemption. The author also posits that it would be beneficial to expose motorists to new or recent trends in the traffic industry such as red-light running, cameras, transponder use, and in-vehicle navigation, among others.
