Abstract

Multi-tasking is part of the job for operators of traffic management centers located in most major U.S. cities. Operators monitor highway remote cameras and analyze road sensor data, and also talk to motorists reporting traffic incidents. With so much data being handled, human errors can and do occur. But these errors can be minimized when traffic management centers (TMCs) are designed with human capabilities in mind. This article describes an Internet-based Computer-Aided Design Support System (CADSS), designed by researchers at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, that provides a complete set of tools for TMC designers who consider human factors in the design process. The components of the CADSS are listed and discussed.
