Abstract

This short article deals with clarification of the difference between and important aspects of the grounding and bonding sub-systems of a traffic signal system. Grounding (the process of protecting metallic components via rods driven into the ground) protects equipment, and is further enhanced by using surge suppression devices to protect against damage from voltage transients. Bonding (connecting the metallic components of a traffic signal system and the ground buss of the controller cabinet via a separate piece of copper wire) protects people.
