Abstract

The southeastern U.S. consistently has the nation's highest rate of fatal traffic crashes. The following states also have a significantly higher proportion of fatal crashes in which drivers were not wearing, or properly using, seat belts: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. This data was gathered by the Georgia Institute of Technology, The FHWA and the NHTSA. Professors from GIT and transportation officials from each southeastern state are conducting a two-year study to determine the causes for this disturbing trend.
