Abstract

This article presents the proper procedure for traffic signal transition while control equipment is being serviced. The recommendations are as follows: (1) Make sure the temporary replacement device (controller or conflict monitor) is programmed to the requirements of the specific intersection being worked on. (2) Since the intersection is to be placed in "flash" at the end of yellow for phases(s) that have concluded timing at the crossing of a barrier, the controller(s) should be programmed to start directly in specific phase green(s) that would have been served next in the normal sequence.(3) With the above conditions satisfied, the control equipment swap can proceed. (4) Repeat the process, if necessary, to reinstall the original equipment. (5) When done, replace the steady red "flasher" module with the original cabinet flasher module.
