Abstract

This brief article details the decision of Clearwater Beach, Florida to utilize an electric rain gauge for timing traffic signals during peak storm hours. The gauge is activated by time-of-day commands issued by Clearwater's traffic control system, so that rain during non-peak beach hours does not call for the special timing plan. When the gauge is active, and the counter is above zero, a latch is set, sending an actuation back to the system and calling a special, immediately implemented, timing plan.
