Abstract

This article summarizes the recommendations of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) study of work zone traffic safety. The summary of recommendations for Roadway Design and Operation are: (1) Highway signs should be bigger and brighter; (2) Roadway signs and markings should be maintained by local and state governments; (3) Traffic engineers should evaluate pedestrian signals that require walking speeds faster than 4 ft. per second; (4) Left-turn lanes and left-turn signals should be used to simplify the complexity of urban intersections; and (5) Research is needed on the performance characteristics of the entire driving population to better determine the proportion of the population excluded by current design standards. Other areas covered were: Crash Protection, Driver Licensing, Improving Transportation Alternatives, and Encouraging Research.
