Abstract

Article describing the use of the CAMEO database to aid emergency response personnel during a July 1991 freight train derailment near Evansville, Indiana. The accident was complicated by the fact that two of the three tank cars involved began to leak acetone. In less than 15 hours the leak was contained, due in large part to information provided by the CAMEO system. CAMEO told fire fighters that acetone is flammable and the vapor could explode, it also warned emergency personnel that if acetone penetrated protective clothing, they should wash with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention. Discusses the new version of CAMEO available, including its Chemical Database covering over 3,300 chemicals and more than 52,000 synonyms.
