Abstract

This article discusses monitoring of traffic signals with emphasis on present voltage monitoring practices and recently introduced current monitoring. Current monitoring of traffic signals is presented with examination of those factors influencing measurement of lamp load currents. The relationship between detected lamp loss and total lamp load was found to be linear and is presented. It is reported that traffic signal monitoring devices do exist which meet existing industry standards for voltage measuring conflict monitors and which also measure current. It is concluded that a practical and reliable means for improving detection of traffic signal lamp outages is now commercially available.
