Abstract

Article presenting the reasons why brighter highway signs should be put into use. Some of the reasons include the following: (1) The growing population of older motorists in need of more visible traffic signs; (2) The slower reaction times of older drivers; (3) Motorists who are disadvantaged due to alcohol/drug impairment, fatigue, vision deficiencies, or being unfamiliar with an area; (4) The increasing disparity in size of cars and trucks; (5) Visual clutter and more lighting on highways means signs have to be more readable; and (6) The increase in traffic volume.
