Abstract

Although the accuracy of event data recorder (EDR) data during steady state operation has been documented and research has shown that EDRs underreport speed during hard braking, there currently is no quantitative method to estimate the actual ground speed from the speed reported by the EDR. This paper reports on tests that were conducted with instrumented vehicles to measure time, speed and distance. Two distinct phases were documented: the initial brake engagement phase and the ongoing deceleration phase following antilock braking system engagement. A method is proposed to better estimate true ground speed during each phase from the speed data reported in the EDR. Directions for future research are suggested.
