Abstract

This study describes, in mathematical terms, the movement of a vehicle as it goes through a turn, an evasive maneuver, a lane change, or a passing maneuver. Specifically, how far the vehicle travels and how long it takes the vehicle to complete the maneuver are investigated. A lane change is described as a turn in one direction followed by a turn in the opposite direction, so that the vehicle ends up in a direction parallel to its original direction. A passing maneuver is described as being two coupled lane-change problems. Numerical experiments are conducted using the mathematical formulas developed in the paper.
