Abstract

Determining the collision pulse associated with an impact event is important in accident reconstruction, vehicle crashworthiness, occupant kinematics and biomechanical engineering. This study seeks to develop closed form analytical solutions for the implied force-deflection and force-crush response for the half sine and haversine collision pulse approximations using known and desired velocity boundary constraints, for vehicles subject to full frontal width engagement impact with fixed, massive rigid barriers. These solutions are developed in the context of including the effects of restitution across the full range of response. A worked example is evaluated to illustrate the points of the analytical methods. Directions for future research are discussed.
