Abstract

An unclear photograph from an accident scene can be detrimental to a criminal case. Many times, a photograph that fails to convey the correct message can be attributed to the photographer's lack of skill. This article discusses some problematic photo subjects and provides some suggestions on how these images can be improved. The problematic subjects include: nighttime scenes; bright, sunny scenes; small roadway surface evidence; recording a vehicle identification number through the windshield; illustrating a lamp filament with high magnification; capturing strands of hair embedded in a windshield; fingerprints; seatbelt loading; crush deformation; traffic control device malfunctions; and sight distance issues. A good accident reconstructionist will take the time to understand his camera and equipment in order to use it more effectively and efficiently
