Abstract

This study attempts to gather useful data regarding the braking efficiency of motorcycles among experienced riders. The two scenarios being evaluated are a full rear wheel lockup at approximately 20mph and a panic brake situation using both front and rear wheels done at 30 mph. Test subjects were 15 motorcycle officers who operate a motorcycle about 40 hours per week. In the 20mph skid to stop test, the values varied, but the average braking efficiency is approximately 52% of available friction. There was no conclusive pattern between riding experience and braking efficiency. In the 30mph panic stop test, the average braking efficiency was approximately 87.5% of available friction. Experience did appear to have some effect on braking efficiency in this test. These findings can be used as best case scenarios for use as upper end values in motorcycle accident reconstruction.
