Abstract

The first commercially-available crash data recorders (CDR) were introduced in 2000, and since then their use and capabilities have grown substantially. This article provides a detailed look at the first 10 years of CDR technology. The evolution of the crash data retrieval system is described, followed by a look at the modules included on Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors vehicles. Issues such as removing a module from a vehicle, retrieving data, and admissibility as evidence are discussed. The article demonstrates how the use of CDR system retrieved data has become a valuable tool for accident reconstructionists while expanding the traffic safety knowledge base. The technology continues to evolve.
