Abstract

This article relates how the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) GeoResearch Group is using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology as a tool in earthquake response assistance. Coupled with GIS, Caltrans is using ShakeMap, a graphic depiction of the intensity of an earthquake in the vicinity of a bridge or other transportation structure. ShakeMaps are available on the Web within 10 minutes of a seismic event though the California Integrated Seismic Netork (CISN), and can help response teams in focusing their resources on the most impacted areas. The maps use different colors to depict damage intensity. In addition, data from maps and bridges can be converted into a priority list which shows the damage potential, route, and post mile for bridges within an affected area.
