Abstract

This article focuses on one particular type of geometric design feature -- speed humps -- that is receiving increasing attention and use, both in North America and abroad. It is based on Guidelines for the Design Application of Speed Humps, a proposed recommended practice of the International Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) which defines speed humps as a roadway geometric design feature consisting of raised pavement constructed or placed in, on and across or partly across a roadway intended to physically reduce vehicle speeds.
