Abstract

Downtown Hayward, California is undertaking a sidewalk and streetscape improvement project to revitalize its historic core downtown. With a population of 144,000, it is located about 25 miles southeast of San Francisco. The target of the project is a four-block section of B St., the citys main thoroughfare downtown. Many of its buildings enjoy historic status. Widened sidewalks and street trees are one element, with benches placed strategically to encourage social interchange but to avoid hampering pedestrian traffic. Mid-block crossings were located in each block to encourage pedestrian safety and to add to visibility. Additional lighting was added and existing mature trees were removed to increase sunlight on the street. The $2.8 million project was built around a public outreach program that kept all parties informed of construction progress through weekly meetings and flyers.
