Abstract

Improvements to the lighting systems on snowplows could make the vehicles' safer, possibly reducing accident rates. Studies have found that glare can be reduced when narrow beams are used and when mounting positions are as far as possible from the line of sight. For instance, auxiliary headlamps mounted on the sides of vehicles are low-cost ways to reduce glare. While flashing and strobing lights can draw attention to a snow plow, studies have found that steady-burning lights are more effective in alerting other drivers to the truck's relative speed and distance as other drivers approach it from behind.
