Abstract

The risk of a fatal automobile crash at night is nearly 3 times as high as the risk in daylight hours. One of the reasons for this is due to the number of visual cues that help to guide drivers and keep them on the road in daylight conditions. An individual driver's night vision characteristics and the lack of adequate visual guidance information are significant factors that contribute to nighttime accidents. This article examines the improvement that can be provided to nighttime visibility by employing retroreflective pavement markings and sign sheeting.
