Abstract

According to a new publication, "Public Transit in America: Findings from the 1995 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey," the transit market is strongly shaped by captive riders without driver's licenses or vehicles. They comprise approximately 70% of transit riders. The report also states that people who use public transit do so because they believe transit is the most convenient means of transportation and it costs less than driving. Respondents who did not use public transit noted that it was unavailable at their work sites, that is was inconvenient, and that they needed their own vehicles. Nationwide, approximately 12% of the population uses public transit one or more times within a 60-day period.
