Abstract

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology is being used in metropolitan areas across the country to ease traffic congestion by incorporating inputs from several sources and communicating that information to the driving public. Driving times as broadcast by radio stations, along with real-time data from traffic cameras and sensors, can be used to trigger different messages on variable sign boards warning drivers of upcoming hazards and slowdowns. The Transportation Operations Coordinating Committee (TRANSCOM) on the East Coast coordinates the traffic monitoring efforts of sixteen agencies in a three-state region (New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut). Oakland County, Michigan is another region that incorporates state of the art technology to enhance the flow of traffic. ITS technology may soon be incorporated into vehicles for continual traffic guidance for drivers.
