Abstract

Ford Motor Company is offering optional rollover sensors and inflatable side curtain airbags on its sport utility vehicles for the 2001 model year. The new system features sensors that measure the amount of horizontal vehicle roll, headliner-concealed side-curtain airbags that extended from the A-pillar back to the pillar behind the rear door, and tethers to keep the airbags in place after inflation. The roll information is processed by a central control module that can trigger the rollover curtain airbags in 130 microseconds. The airbags are designed to remain inflated for up to 6 seconds, which is approximately how long it takes an average vehicle to roll over several times.
