Abstract

A not uncommon crash scenario is one in which an automobile or light truck collides head-on into the rear of a semi-trailer. However, the damage profile this type of impact generates on the lighter vehicle is quite unlike the damage profile generated in fixed rigid barrier tests. Questions arise. How can the reconstructionist estimate car impact speeds (or delta V's) for truck underrides? Is there any correlation between fixed barrier tests and underride collisions? This article and accompanying table, photographs and diagrams are based on excerpts from reports on two series of crash tests sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The tests were conducted at the Vehicle Research and Test Center in East Liberty, Ohio. The purpose of the tests was for research and development in support of the CRASHIII damage algorithm reformation, i.e., perfecting the 'A', 'B' and 'G' constants.
