Abstract

This study investigates how pedestrians in safety clothing of different colors, or no safety clothing at all, are seen in a "real" traffic setting at night. Retroreflective materials compared were fluorescent lime, fluorescent red orange and silver-white. Colors tested include white, fluorescent lime, and fluorescent red orange. Three traffic vests were utilized in the study. They all had two 18-inch vertical stripes (2 inches wide) and one 24-inch (2 inches wide) horizontal stripe facing the driver. Vertical stripes were placed 14 inches apart. The investigation aimed to shed light on ways to increase pedestrian visibility and safety during nighttime hours.
