Abstract

This article discusses the findings of a report published in the Journal of the National Medical Association entitled, "Role of African-American Physicians in Reducing Traffic-Related Injury and Death Among African Americans." The paper finds that African Americans are affected disproportionately by traffic-related fatalities and injuries, largely due to certain poor traffic safety practices within the African American community. These include failure to use seat belts and child restraints, failure to follow traffic safety laws and recommendations, driving while impaired, and a high rate of pedestrian accidents, often brought on by impairment of drivers. More safety outreach within the African American community is urged.
