Abstract

The author discusses in detail the steps to be taken when undertaking a crush measurement process in vehicle damage evaluation. Methods include: dividing damage width into five equal length segments; establishing a baseline from which damage will be measured; determining the plane level at which the damage occurred. The methodology presented here requires a minimum amount of equipment to obtain the required measurements. Simple measuring devices, such as steel tapes and string, are commonly available. The photos accompanying this article depict a crush measurement jig built by the author, which consists of two stands commonly used for supporting lights and reflector panels by professional photographers. A set of six wood dowels and metal clamps, to hold everything in place, complete the jig.
