Abstract

A method was developed to estimate the number, types and locations of hazardous materials highway transportation accidents in Virginia. It was estimated that about 240 such accidents will occur over a ten year period. Forty one percent can be expected to involve flammable liquids, 23% combustibles, and 11% corrosives. Hazardous materials accident expectations were calculated for about 1600 sections of highway. The most dangerous routes, highway sections, and areas in the state were identified. Seventy five percent of the hazardous materials highway accidents can be expected to occur on 10 highways and 50% can be expected to occur in 14 of 100 county areas. Emergency response facilities and locations were also evaluated. Correlation density maps were developed to describe facilities.
