Abstract

A performance test that could increase police efficiency in detecting impaired drivers was assessed on the ability of the test to differentiate sober and impaired drivers. The performance test required drivers to align the middle of their vehicle to a series of lines marked in/or near the middle of the lane while maintaining a prescribed speed. The results show that 30% of impaired drivers fail the test while only 1% of sober drivers fail or, using a more stringent fail criteria, 66% of impaired drivers fail while 23% of sober drivers fail.
