Abstract

The new Brazilian Traffic Code, implemented on 22 January 1998, has contributed to a dramatic decrease in accident rates. The code, which allows for stiffer fines, confiscation of offenders' license tags, and even the cars themselves, seems to have been received and absorbed very well by the driving population. This article looks at one of the key parts of the code: pedestrian safety.
