Abstract

Trends and Issues no. 140 examined the relationship between alcohol consumption of rural youth and social disorder between 1993 and 1998. This study focuses on 1998, presenting data on the prevalence of committing alcohol related social disorder, frequency of committing alcohol related social disorder, the concentration of perpetrators, the consumption status and number of offences, and perpetrators as victims.

Results suggest that, while alcohol-related victimisation is decreasing, it is still being perpetrated by a core of youth. The greatest impact on rates of alcohol-related social disorder in rural regions would flow from the promotion of responsible serving practices in pubs, and the early identification and treatment/diversion of multiple and repeat offenders.
