Abstract

A secondary analysis of the National Nursing Home Survey (NMIS) was conducted in order to determine probability estimates of therapeutic recreation services by gender. A specification of the logit model for categorical data was used to express the relationship between participation in therapeutic recreation and selected demographic and functional characteristics of nursing home residents, e.g., age, mental health, physical health and activities of daily living (ADLs). Results revealed differences in the utilization of therapeutic recreation services by age, gender and ADLs. Participants in therapeutic recreation services were more likely to be male, under the age of 74, with limited need for assistance in ADLs.
