Abstract

This paper examines the health status of the elderly as determined by self-rating methods. Self-rating methods were found to be viable for the institutionalized as well as the noninstitutionalized elderly. Socioeconomic factors were an important consideration in the interpretation of health data. Self-ratings of health among the elderly were found to be significantly related to phsyicians' medical evaluation-although not intended as a substitute. Self-rating methods could provide a valid, cost-effective means of health assessment in experimental and survey research where other forms of health information are lacking.
