Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the common dilemma of providing the institutionalized elderly freedom to choose their own level of involvement in recreation activities. The concepts of leisure, freedom, and intervention are examined within the context of both the therapeutic recreation service model and sociological theories of aging and leisure satisfaction. Practical implications for recreation therapists and/or activity professionals are presented and grounded within a proposed theoretical framework which addresses the practitioner's role regarding free choice and the intervention continuum.
