Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review some of the philosophical considerations underlying program planning for the older adult. A brief description of the present state of provision is presented emphasizing the diversional, temporary nature of these services. Utilizing a human resource accounting model, a critical analysis is undertaken attacking the lack of a sound philosophy behind the programs in the aging industry. In conclusion an alternate philosophy based on the existential school of thought is offered; one which is founded on the notion of life review as an essential task in the last stages of life. The emphasis of this paper is not on practical aspects of program planning, rather it is intended to motivate the planner to examine the philosophical underpinnings of their programs for the older adult and to determine if the existence of these programs can be justified.
