Abstract

Responses to three open-ended questions about perception of past, present, and future were obtained during interviews with twenty-five residents at the Orleans Convalescent and Retirement Center. From the content of these responses, the relative importance of task andlor interpersonal orientations, and each resident's preferred time perspective were examined. It was found that two predominant factors enhance continued development at the end of the life span: (1) sensitivity to the functional and/or relational orientations that have evolved as a consequence of each resident's pattern of psychic investments over the life span; and (2) attentiveness to each resident's unique time frame. Implications for activity management are discussed.
