Abstract

Because we are people helping people, there is the potential linkage with burnout because of our very altruism. There should be a psychological "fit" between the nurturing role of staff and dependency needs of patients. In the field of aging there is a need for realistic appraisal of LTC patients plus improving their quality of life. The ideal job personality type is someone who has empathy. Burnout personalities, causes, and symptoms are delineated as well as possible strategies for coping with excessive stress. Both stresses at work and stresses outside of work can impinge on burnout. Our Achilles' heel of caring and sensitivity can, ideally, become our greatest asset in helping other people.
