Abstract

Four hundred ninety caregivers to dementia victims from 16 states completed questionnaires assessing a range of information including personal, psychosocial and situational characteristics, along with information regarding attendance and perceived helpfulness from support group meetings. A stepwise regression procedure revealed a positive relationship between number of meetings attended and perceived helpfulness of meetings, and length of time providing care, and a negative relationship with caregiver life satisfaction. Implications for future research, nursing home services and intervention strategies are discussed, particularly regarding the unexpected finding that those attending more meetings reported lower life satisfaction.
