Abstract

Patients in the terminal stages of their lives who have been referred to occupational therapy could be offered activities adapted to be symbolically relevant to their developmental levels and occupational role requirements. Suggestions for appropriate activities are given for every life stage, to be used as symbolic substitutes for life satisfactions when all possibilities for future achievements are gone. The importance of tangible awards and recognition is stressed. The suggestions are based on the developmental stages as defined by Erik Erikson. Clinical cases are drawn from the practice and experience of the writer.
