Abstract

The recreation therapist who is skilled in both counseling and therapeutic recreation interventions can more effectively address the needs and issues of the elderly in adult day care and long term intermediate care and skilled nursing home facilities. A working knowledge of counseling psychology contributes to an understanding of the psychological needs and problems of this population. By utilizing suitable short-term, growth-oriented counseling strategies in conjunction with therapeutic recreational activities, the recreation therapist can significantly improve the psychosocia1 functioning of their clients.
